What is Lectron?

As one of the top best-selling EV charger, adapter, and accessory manufacturers in the United States, Lectron has been around since 2017.

What is Grizzl-E?

United Chargers Inc., the company behind the Grizzl-E Level 2 EVSE, was founded in 2019. In June 2020, the company released its first product, the Grizzl-E Level 2 EVSE, which quickly made its name in the EVSE market. 

A popular charger for home use, Grizzl-E’s chargers are affordable and robust. It’s based in Ontario, Canada, and focuses on researching, developing, and manufacturing affordable and practical EV charging solutions.

Charging Speed and Output Power

The Lectron Level 2 EV charger is a powerful charging solution for EV charging. It is powered by 240 volts.

Lectron has a few level 2 models with different charging speeds and amperage. Here are two popular ones:

    1. Lectron V-Box 48 Amp EV charger
    2. Lectron 240-V 32 Amp EV charger

Level 2 chargers can charge electric vehicles’ batteries from 0 to 80% in 4-10 hours.

With the Lectron V-Box 48 Amp model, you can charge up to 48 amps. Looking at the power output, you will get 11.52 kWh which gives 46 miles per hour. This is amazing.

Lectron’s 240V 32 Amp Level 2 EV charger, for example, provides 28 miles of range per hour with 32A and 7.68kW.

The Lectron options are designed for the J1772 EV charging standard.

Now let’s look into Grizzl-E options for level 2 charging.

Level 2 Grizzl-E chargers charge electric vehicles (EVs) at different rates based on the model and the EV.

A Grizzl-E Smart, with charging power of up to 40 amps. This charger can switch between different charging speeds, like 16, 24, 32 and 40 amps. In terms of maximum output power, the Grizzl-E smart can produce 10kW.

Here is the approximate mileage you can achieve at different speeds with the Grizzl-E:

    • At 40A: 28-30 miles per hour
    • At 32A: 22-25 miles per hour
    • At 24A: 15-18 miles per hour
    • At 16A: 10-12 miles per hour

Remember, actual charging times can vary based on a variety of factors, including the vehicle’s battery capacity, the current state of charge, and the charger’s power output.

Level 2 chargers are significantly faster than Level 1 chargers, which typically operate on 120-volt household outlets. Due to this, they are very popular with homeowners who wish to charge EVs overnight or during a typical workday.

Cable Length of Lectron vs Grizzl-E

For many EV owners, the cable length is a big deal — especially for garages. It gives greater flexibility in parking and positioning the vehicle while it charges, making it more convenient for users.

Lectron level 2 chargers come with 20-foot cable lengths. This is about 6 meters long.

Grizzl-E has a longer cable length than a Lectron EV charger. The Grizzl-E comes with a 24-foot cable equivalent to about 7.5 meters. The charging cable is quite premium and heavy. This cable folds and unfolds very well, which shows its quality. 

With the Grizzl-E level 2 charger, you get mounting brackets, attachment screws, a cable management holder, and a plug-in connection.

Installation: How Easy is it?

The installation process and difficulty is a big factor in EV chargers. This is because homeowners want a charging solution that is easy to install and doesn’t require extensive electrical work or heavy electrical assistance. 

Typically the process of installing EV chargers is as follows: 

    • Mounting the unit 
    • Connection to the power source 
    • Ensuring proper wiring and safety measures 

If you have a 240V plug in your garage already set up then that’s easier because you just need to plug in to the 240 outlets and you get the benefit of level 2 charging. Make sure to get the most out of the charging speed the outlet has a capacity of 50A. 

The installation should always be done by a qualified electrician if you need to do one. On average, you should expect an installation cost range between $500 to $2000 depending on the task.

Some general tips to consider for installation: 

    • Should anchored into a mounting support such as a 2” x 4” stud or a solid surface
    • Consider the location where the reach to your EV charging location is easily possible 
    • The circuit breaker is suggested 
    • You will need to connect the charger to your home WiFi system 

Compatibility of Lectron vs. Grizzl-E Chargers

Compatibility with EV chargers is important for charging electric vehicles efficiently. When EV chargers are compatible with different vehicle models and charging standards, it allows for a seamless charging experience. This eliminates the need for adapters or additional equipment.

Lectron level 2 chargers, both 32 and 48-amp models, are J1772 compatible. You can plug it into a NEMA 14-50 outlet or hardwire it for Level 2 charging.

In contrast, Grizzl-E is designed for all EVs and plug-in hybrids in North America. All of them are UL-tested and certified, so they’re good for a wide range of electric cars. When you purchase through their website you can choose between Tesla or J1772 holster options.

Smart Features: How Smart They are?

Lectron and Grizzl-E both have smart features through their companion app. After connecting through WiFi you have access to different features. 

With Lectron you can schedule charging sessions, track the charging, and set when energy consumption and rates are lower. 

Both of the chargers have a visual indicator on the charger itself. There’s an LED indicator to show charging progress or if there’s a problem. The difference with Lectron is that it shows how long until it reaches full charge. Which is a useful feature.

Build Quality of Lectron and Grizzl-E Chargers

Warranty

A warranty is an important aspect of EV chargers. It is dependent on when the charger was purchased and the options you selected. For Lectron EV chargers, the warranty is 2 years if it was purchased after January 1, 2023. And before January 2023 you are subject to the one-year limited warranty. 

Limited Warranty covers defects in materials and assembly of the products, and tampering with the products voids the warranty. There is also the option of extending the warranty. Lectron’s Extend warranty adds three years of coverage to the 1-year factory warranty on its products, for a total of four years. 

The manufacturer’s warranty for Grizzl-E EV chargers is available for three or five years, as extended by United Chargers. To get the 5 year warranty you will need to pay extra $100. 

Warranty coverage applies to defects in materials and workmanship under normal operating conditions. If a charging station becomes defective during the warranty period, United Chargers will replace it. Nevertheless, the warranty does not apply if the product has been misused, abused, altered, or used with third-party extension cords.
